you cant miss it, its at the bottom of the M1

I once pulled into newport pagnall services south to consult the delivery sheets and a huge shiny new artic pulled along side with a huge shiny new fridge trailer on it (chug chug chugga chug) and a lad about 18/19 got out the driver side and walked round to my side of my truck and said...

(cue irish accent) excuse me sir, would dat road der be going to london? (he pointed to the M1 south), oive come down from scotland and missed the M40 so oi did, Oi need to pick up the M4 so oi do....

tractor unit £30,000, trailer £30,000 load possibly £250,000

A-Z priceless

that article is typical journalistic license the facts are highly embellished and wrong but I'm sure the magazine that printed it got a nice big advert out of addison lee

Same here, I once put the Sat Nav on to get to the Days Hotel on Kennington Road, I ended up on Harley Street, not that I need plastic surgery like. 8) Eventually got there thanks to a Taxi Driver.

Mine does. There's an option to plan either shortest or fastest route. If it's a local job I have it on shortest and combine it with local knowledge, if it's a distance job I'll set it to fastest to keep me on main roads and motorways.

Thing that annoys me though, if I'm in an unfamiliar area and sat-navs set to 'shortest route' is when a punter says youv'e gone the long way round there. I'll say I don't know and I'm going off the satnav and they reply 'well the satnavs wrong then'. So I'll go off their directions which is usually further, so more pennies for me .

I'm only gonna say two things...

A sat-nav will never replace local knowledge. As good as they are, they can't keep up-to-date with hotel / business name changes, roadworks etc.
Certain roads that a sat-nav would direct you down are avoided by taxi / PH drivers for various reasons that a sat-nav wouldn't pick up on and so on...

Nobody can say 'all' taxi drivers in an area are bad / rude etc... Just as they can't say they are all good / polite. All drivers are individuals. Any fella that says 'all' Addison Lee drivers are great is lying... unless he has made over 2000 journeys with AL and had a different driver each time, without any problems.

What a load of crap this article is.

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 21 March, 2011 – Europe’s largest private hire firm, Addison Lee, has taken delivery of the first of the 1,200 Ford Galaxy Multi Purpose Vehicles which will join its fleet this year.

It is the largest single-year order that Addison Lee has ever placed with Ford. By November the firm’s 2,500-strong minicab fleet will be 100 per cent Ford. The Galaxy models – all diesel, all automatic and, appropriately for Ford, all black – will be delivered at the rate of around 28 a week over the coming months.

Addison Lee fleet manager Rob Daniels said: “We spent three months assessing vehicles and talking to manufacturers; the Ford Galaxy emerged as the best package for us on many levels, not only financially. It is safe, offers low emissions and is economical to run.”

The outstanding economy of the Ford Galaxy 2.0 140PS TDCi PowerShift model was illustrated by Addison Lee last autumn, when one of their drivers achieved an average fuel consumption figure calculated to be 57.08mpg on the MPG Marathon (the UK’s premier economy driving event.)

Kevin Griffin, Ford’s fleet director, said: “Addison Lee has recognised the Ford Galaxy’s class-leading attributes. It complements their own prestige status as a provider of premium minicabs and chauffeur cars.”

The firm has cut emissions per journey by more than 17 per cent since 2002 and is working on a further six per cent year-on-year reduction. The company is the only member of 190 businesses in the Green500 to achieve the highest ‘Diamond’ status for reducing carbon emissions and has won numerous awards for its programme to reduce its environmental impact.

Addison Lee will be disposing of its 2007-2009 Galaxy 2.0TDCI automatics with the older 6-speed torque converter autobox from June 2011 at its disposals centre, corner of Hampstead Road and Granby Terrace, just South of Greater London House, London, tel 0207 3889799. These Galaxys are highly rated by their drivers.

Addison Lee is London’s premium minicab service and also offers chauffeur services, international delivery services, couriers and executive coaches. Founded in Battersea in 1975, Addison Lee carries 10 million passengers a year and couriers more than 40,000 deliveries every month.

Green500is one of a number of London Development Agency initiatives which aim to reduce London's CO2 emissions. The aim of Green500 is to enlist some of London’s largest and most prestigious organisations, and mentor them through their carbon reduction commitments.

It's all going terribly wrong for Addy Lee - 28 new vehicles a week
 and buy one get one free by comparison to the price of those old tractors you're all driving

It's hardly news though is it?

Griffens always replaced his vehicles when they reach 3 years old.

I guess they have to with the drivers sitting in them for 15 hours a day 365 days a year.

As for the 'tractor' comment, I think you'll find my Mercedes Vito far superior than a family car like the Galaxy with it's 5" of leg room.

113,000 miles on a two and a half year old motor?!

Those Vito owners will love Mercedes labour rates when they come to service them.

Not with 3 years free servicing I won't.

Then it's goodbye Vito for either the Euro 5 version or a TX4.

Hire Addison Lee and watch a pedestrian die under the front wheels?
