Taxi driver dies 12 days after crash with police car on its way to Royal Wedding 'party'

May 11 2011

A taxi driver whose car collided with a police vehicle on its way to deal with an unauthorised park party has died in hospital.

The 65-year-old was seriously injured on April 29 - when official street parties were being held to celebrate the royal wedding - as police rushed to Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow's west end to control an unplanned event involving around 6000 people.

His Fiat Doblo collided with the Ford Transit police van on the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Great Western Road at around 5.40pm.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to the city's Western Infirmary, where he was placed in intensive care.

But today he died in hospital, almost two weeks after the crash.

Two passengers and two police officers were also treated at the scene of the accident for minor injuries.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "We can confirm that the 65-year-old man involved in this incident died on Wednesday morning.

"His family has been informed."

An investigation will be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Kelvingrove party, which was arranged over social networking site Facebook, resulted in 22 arrests and 11 officers were injured.

Three men, aged 21, 30, and 46, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week in connection with the event
