Ours dropped 2p on Monday. The cheapest here is £1.469 also.

I have just checked this morning and the price actually only came down 1p to £1.479

The simple answer to that is YES.

Once upon a time perhaps, but once the practice is established it's difficult for anyone to do otherwise, so they all end up doing it.

But there's still a psychological thing attached to it, that's why retailers still sell something for £999 rather than £1,000, for example.

Funny that there's not much evidence of it being used in the taxi trade though - on quotes for airport jobs, for example, but I suspect it's because drivers don't like giving change.

In the trade it's called kidding people, it works and it works good.

One of the reasons for the .99p thing was to reduce theft by employees. If you went into a shop and bought something for £10 the cashier could slip it into their pocket without going through the till. By charging £9.99 the cashier has to ring it through to open the till to give you your 1p change.
