I dont know the figures but i bet the percentage of Disabled who use wheelchair's is minimal, yet everything is gearing to accomodate them rather than an equal split.
In fact if the figures were released to show the percentage who must have a wav, and those who cant use them for one reason or another the split would be very close indeed.

No way would they be close if you included all the elderly and infirm.

The number who can't use a vehicle suitable for a wheelchair user is very high.

100% WAV cant work because it discriminates against most elderly. And a large number of punters ASK for a NORMAL CAR.
A fair proportion need to be WAV witin the next 2-3 years.
Who's going to buy a WAV for 20-25k if they can get away without one?
The only way i can see how they'll achieve it is to either draw numbers out of a hat and say next year your going to be wav or lose your licence, or make the next 10 or whatever licences granted must be wav.
It's difficult one! And lots of drivers will be up in arms over it but it's got to happen somehow.

Yes, but that all seems a bit ''one rule for one, another rule for others". And didn't Aberdeen Council receive legal advice that such a policy might be illegal, in the long term if not as an interim measure.

I'm not a great WAV fan, but at the end of the day if there must be WAVs then I think a 100% fleet is better than a mixed one, since that causes other problems, such as people walking past them on the ranks, which can cause conflict.

And, as Sussex says, they've managed without saloon taxis in many areas for years.

Indeed, 100% WAV is the only fairway, (pun intended) it's funny how people who have never done a single shift in a WAV know how "unaccessible" these accessible vehicles are. Having owned 3 metrocabs over the last 15 years, I have never had any problems with access and egress for the elderly, infirm or ambulatory disabled. Having said all that, the last time I took my ramp out of the boot was this morning to oil the hinges, and the time before that was, about six months ago, when I took them out of the boot to oil the hinges. Dial a ride, bless 'em have cornered that market, and since I do not do school or Social Service contracts anymore, (cash is king) Passengers requiring a wheelchair accessible vehicle, (hackney carriage) are as rare as unicorns round here. I have a Metrocab because this fair City has a all WAV Condition of License, and I would have one even if they allowed a saloon to be licensed, on safety (mine) grounds.
Still, is it not the case that all licensed Hackney Carriages, (or as I like to call them, TAXI'S) will have to be WAV from 1/1/2012?

I think for most areas they will have to have a policy in place by 2010, and 100% WAV fleet by 2020.

All it needs now is for the DfT to get their f***ing fingers out.

I wonder if they have done an unmet demand survey, to see how many are need exactly, Its totally ludicrous to expect everyone to change there must be a mixture, I bet there is only a need for about 6 wav for the whole area.

what does change their vehicle mean? in dundee they put any replacement vehicles, which turned out to be aimed at the new wav plates,
most were confused thinking that the saloon ops changing vehicles would have to go wav
