Bolton horror crash video showing driver hitting 122mph 'forming part of police investigation'

Video footage showing a driver hitting speeds of more than 120mph while weaving in and out of traffic is forming part of a police investigation into a fatal head on crash in Bolton on Sunday (January 11).

The clip appears to show a car travelling at high-speed down a busy street, with the driver overtaking other cars and veering onto the wrong side of the road. At one point in the clip, the car appears to reach a speed of 122mph.

The M.E.N understands that the video is believed to have been filmed by an occupant of the Seat Leon involved in the fatal crash on Wigan Road. Three teenagers in the Seat died, as well as the driver of a Citroen C4 Picasso taxi.

Today (January 12), the driver of the taxi has been named as 54-year-old Masrob Ali.

Police issue major update after four die in horror head-on crash in Bolton

A timestamp on the clip, which has been shared extensively on social media, states that it was filmed at 3am, which is understood to be Saturday morning (January 10) - just shy of 24 hours before the fatal crash at 12.50am on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police are understood to be probing the clip as part of their investigations.

Police said emergency crews were scrambled to the scene on Wigan Road after the red Seat collided head-on with the Picasso. The driver of the Seat and two passengers died.

They have been identified as being Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, 18, Farhan Patel, 18, and 19-year-old Mohammed Danyaal. The driver of the Picasso, 54-year-old Masrob Ali also died in the 'devastating' crash.

Five injured passengers were taken to hospital from the scene. In the Citroen, a 29-year-old woman suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

A 28-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man suffered serious injuries and a 29-year-old man has minor injuries. An 18-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Seat, remains in hospital for treatment on minor injuries.

Mr Ali's family described him as being 'the gentlest soul'. They said he had worked as a taxi driver for around 10 years.

His oldest child, 29-year-old Humayra, said: "Nobody has a bad word to say against him, he was so kind and the best dad. When they knocked on our door and told us what had happened I was just so confused.

"Dad was such a safe driver and even when we said we were worried something might happen he would say 'don't worry about me'."

Detective Inspector Andrew Page, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are still in the early stages of our investigation and work is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this terrible incident. As an investigation team we would encourage people to be mindful of sharing footage on social media given the impact this will have on all the families involved in such a tragic incident.

"Thanks to patrols in the area, teams were able to get to the incident location quickly to what was a particularly challenging scene for colleagues in the emergency services. I want to thank first responders from our Bolton district and the Road Policing Unit, alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service for their hard work since this incident.

"The scene closed on Sunday evening, but we are still appealing for any witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the vehicle driving before the collision, witnessed the incident itself, or has dashcam/ CCTV footage of the incident can share it with us.

"You can contact us on directly on 0161 856 4741, quoting log number 111 of 11/01/2025. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

So although most sources simply describe him as a 'taxi' driver, it's been reported in some outlets that's he was specifically private hire, and worked for Uber.

And, for what it's worth, I suspect he was badged and plated in Wolverhampton.

This image of the damaged vehicle shows a narrow yellow plate, thus just like the distinctive Wolves ones. You can just about make out the distinctive white area top centre in the plates, which contain the council logo:

The Wolverhampton licensing register shows only one badgeholder with the name Masrob, and the full name is Masrob Ali, thus the same as the deceased driver.

(No way of checking the vehicle database, because it doesn't use names, and you'd need either the plate number or registration number to find it.)

Anyway, may he rest in peace [-o<

And, as has often been said on here before, it's the kind of thing that could happen to any driver in the trade, however careful they are. And night drivers are particularly at risk, and anyone who's driven nights will be more than aware of that risk from a particular demographic of 'civilian' drivers usually more apparent late at night.

This is sounding more and more like maybe second generation immigrant teenagers indulging in non traditional practices such as drugs and boy racing. If it was the same car in that video then clearly the driver was into risk taking and sadly tragic consequences came to pass

I blame Grand theft auto and mario cart !

Couldn't find the original video from the car hitting 122mph the night before the collision, but this is the clearest version I could find, assuming it's still there at the top of this page when anyone clicks on this link:

https://www.facebook.com/qas.chaudry/videos

And I'd put lots of money on it being on the same stretch of road where the collision happened about 22 hours later.

Won't bore on about the identifying details in the video, but look, for example, at the video at about 16 seconds (pause it if you can and use the slider to move the timings around) and you can see a blue, white and red neon sign to the left - pretty sure it's the same sign as the one on the shop to the left here:

Slightly better version of the photo:

https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/resourc ... s/20407048

Then on the video you can just see the Esso filling station almost immediately after that shop sign, on the same side of the road, just visible as the in-car camera pans back to the speedometer. The garage is also visible on the photo above, albeit a bit blurred.

I'd guess the collision happened at the point around 21 seconds on the video.

So basically they were recreating the run in the video about 22 hours later, but their luck ran out when the Uber driver appeared in the other direction and they were on the wrong side of the road :-|

Anyway, since GMP are considering the video as part of their investigation, no doubt they'll have a good quality version with enhancement tools etc, and won't have taken them long to work it all out.

And at about 23 seconds on the video (thus past the collision site) stop it at the right spot and you can see zigzags in the middle of the road, and green traffic lights.

Which I'd say is the pedestrian crossing here (although the lights aren't in frame) looking back down the hill. The collision took place close to the junction where the white building marked Broomfield House is located. The Esso sign is just visible further down the hill, immediately above the white van just to the right of the two police officers walking together.

Of course, the huge telephoto lens will make everything look closer together than it actually is, but probably almost 350 yards between the tape visible in the photo here down to the Esso garage:

If the young driver had survived, there is a case for charging him with murder.

I know the police down here consider a car, in cases such as the above, as a weapon.

Longish piece in the Mirror speaking to two of the injured in the taxi (PH), including some nice words about the driver.

Have been ignoring a lot of the stuff about this more recently...

And this is presumably just a procedural formality as the investigation continues :?

Inquests open into deaths of teenagers and taxi driver in horror car crash

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk ... i-33280555

Coroner's court hearings were held on Wednesday

Inquests into the deaths of three teenagers and a taxi driver in a horror car crash have been opened and adjourned at a coroner's court.

Brief, largely administrative hearings were held at Bolton Coroner's Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Mohammed Jibrael Mukhtar, 18, is believed to have been driving a Seat Leon car that collided with a Citroen C4 Picasso taxi on Wigan Road in Bolton on Sunday, January 11.

He was killed alongside his friends Farhan Imtiyaz Patel, 18, and 19-year-old Mohammed-Danyaal Asghar-Ali, who were inside the car. The head-on crash also claimed the life of taxi driver Masrob Ali.

Inquests into the deaths of Mohammed, Farhan and Mohammad-Danyaal were opened at 2pm Wednesday.

Mohammad-Danyaal's 'place of death' was given as the Royal Bolton Hospital. It is understood his friends died at the scene. All three were confirmed to be from Bolton.

An inquest into the death of taxi driver Mr Ali was also opened at a separate hearing at the same court later on Wednesday afternoon. He was 54 and from Blackburn.

Coroner Michael Pemberton presided over the inquest openings and all four died on January 11.

The inquests were adjourned to future dates.

In its last update, Greater Manchester Police said five passengers from both vehicles remained in hospital for treatment.

In the Citroen, a 29-year-old woman was said to have suffered potentially life-threatening injuries. A 28-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man suffered serious injuries, and a 29-year-old man had minor injuries.

An 18-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Seat Leon, remains in hospital for treatment on minor injuries, police said at the time.

There have been no further formal updates since.

I suspect with this that the police are going to struggle to put together an accurate picture of what happenned as all of the survivors were in the back seat without a clear view. The survivor from the leon is unlikely to drop his dead mate in it so evidence from the actual scene is what they will go on.

I can guarantee that the police knew within hours exactly what happened.
