In areas like Peterborough they use the PCO rules which means that the turning circle of the vehicle is the critical deciding factor where the PCO rules are NOT used as the basis for licencing hackneys any vehicle can be plated hackney so in areas like mine you can have anything from an 8 seater transit to ford focus plated as a Hackney !

The Council, the operators, the drivers, the police, the punters, all would appear to be happy to retain the status quo in Peterborough.

So why should anyone from outside of the town, or indeed outside of England, foist the less than wonderful van conversion on them when they clearly do not want it?

Local democracy at work in Peterborough, and well done them.

Well even if it was foisted on to them, as you put it, then given what you say at the outset it would be irrelevant if no one wanted to buy one

Why didn't the council just use the research to decide the policy anyway?

But I agree that it's a waste of money, because this should be decided nationally, and each council shouldn't be paying consultants a fortune to regurgitate the same old arguments.

But the tale does have some merit since it shows the wastefulness of the councils know best approach. :)

Would this be the time to have a go at the PCO, and try to get them to come out of the dark ages, as it seems until they lighten up some councils will still have there heads stuck up there arses.
When where the PCO's rules last challenged, not only by drivers but any union or government body

If some don't want them, then they don't have to buy them.

But if one or two want to buy them, in the same way as most UK's cabbies can, then why should they not be allowed?

Lenin would have been proud of such polices.

It would seem one wanted to, and then had a change of "Heart" as it was so succinctly put in this thread header. But only ONE. Strange that, isn't it?

What has Lenin to do with the subject?

I think you'll find if you talk to them that many of the peterborough drivers are interested BUT a large number of these vehicles are ALREADY plated private hire and this is the nub of the argument do you allow PH and Hackney to run identical vehicles ????????

They must be blind down there if they cannot tell the difference, and they would not be identical PH do not have top signs, or a dividing panel, and the punters have to climb into the rear seats

Is it any wonder then, PH are not allowed to have a top sign by law so who is in the wrong.

I don't think there's any national law against PH having topsigns, so basically it's up to each LA.

The use of the word 'taxi' on the sign is a different matter though.
