3. Taxi drivers be allowed to use the red diesel that is permitted for e.g. farmers.

I think that's the way forward.

and where will you source this from..cant see garage forecourts keeping it and youd need a Fair sized fleet to merit a Tank to store your own in. not practical. and all vehicles would be back and forth to base to fill up. its not like farmers who probably travels a couple of miles from his tank. then theres the Council rules and regulations regarding the safe storage of fuel, then theres them that would like to Knick it.

Only the big boys would benefit and not the small operators.

I have only ever seen red diesel for sale at 1 forecourt. Naturally this is at a small rural filling station miles from anywhere.

If taxis were allowed to use it..... I can guarantee that petrol stations would sell it

Because we Couldnt afford a Red Diesel storage tank and Pump, these have to contain Diesel in case of a Spillage so need to be Walled all round the base, Also because we operate from Home we would not get planning Permission to put a Fuel Tank in the garden of an average Size house. Normally small operators dont have a Dedicated ring fenced vehicle yard.

Im in a rural area, whos going to Put Red Diesel on a Forecourt for no more than a Half a Dozen regular Customers with no more 12 vehicles between them.

Surely a rural area would be better than a metropolis? Youve farmers there?

I work in a city and live in a rural area, and I can get red diesel from umpteen different stations.

But I can assure you that if there was a way you could run cabs on horse pi** someone would have it on tap at a petrol station near you.

how do you stop every John Doe becoming licensed cab drivers in order to take advantage of the cheap fuel? I think that's how the Government will look at it. Has anyone got any ideas?

Regards

JD

As far as I'm aware it hasn't led to tons of folks getting licensed in London to avoid the congestion charge, and that's (I believe) around £10 a day. Not far off what we would save.

At present we have Customs and Excise folks going around testing cars for red diesel, I can't see why they couldn't also test to see if the licensed vehicle using red diesel is in fact a properly licensed vehicle used solely for the use in taxi or private hire work.

Previous years accounts would be a start. :?

In relation to the legal use of red diesels in taxi/PH vehicles, it might be a good idea if a union could get their political officer to write to Gordon Brown pointing out what benefits it could have for the government.

I mean receiving the votes of 250,000 licensed drivers and their families, along with many of their punters, might just help him stay at his job for another five years.

Yes it would cost them a few bob, but how much can the Labour party do out of government?

well i live in a small town out in the deepest agricultural Borders countryside...and I cant name one single garage selling Red diesel. Farmers the traditional users of red diesel have their own farm Fuel tanks (which incidentally attracts fuel Thiefs like farm yard Dung attracts flys). Skippys a borders man maybe he knows of a forecourt in the area that sells red diesel.
