Does anyone else use National Travel Tokens? They're 50p tokens, aluminium, I believe, normally with a picture of a bus or castle or some such similar icon on one side.

Ours are issued in sealed packs of 35.00. I'm often offered packs for, say, 30.00!!!

Quite right, Grandad - there have been numerous Truck Acts in the UK, and the word truck comes from the French for barter, and it has nothing to do with HGVs or whatever.

However, I suspect it only applies to an employment relationship, not a normal commercial contract or transaction; after all, what would you do with the Argos vouchers you get at Christmas? :)

Yes I sort of see what you mean but the difforence to me would be that these vouchers are being used as a payment and the Argos (other gift vouchers are available) is that they are a gift.

I meant from the point of view of whoever was receiving the voucher - in this case Argos, in the taxi case the firm or driver - the person using the voucher has received it 'free' whether it's from the council or the gift donor.

Maybe Argos is a bit example, however, because they are both issuing and receiving the token.

What about a book token, which you can buy anywhere and redeem anywhere? The book shop receiving the token is in effect in the same position as the taxi driver.

The point is that you're recieving something other than money in payment, and if you were an employee then that would breach the Truck Act, but since you have no such relationship with the voucher giver then the Truck Act is irrelevant.
