Liverpool John Lennon Airport today announced that due to the transition of the ground handling service provision for easyJet, from the Airport Company to a third party operator, it will be necessary to make 104 members of Ramp Services staff redundant.
The Airport Company are however hopeful that the majority of the staff affected will now be recruited by the appointed third party ground handling operator. This company will be expected to increase their presence at JLA to cope with this new business taking on responsibility for the provision of all easyJet's baggage handling needs which until now have been provided by the Airport Company.
JLA believe that aviation ground services operator Penauille Servisair will provide this service and confirmed that it is currently in talks with them with a view to them expanding their current Ground Handling License to include the ability to provide baggage handling services. Subject to agreeing the License with JLA, Penauille Servisair will be in a position to offer these expanded services to its airline customers.
The transition from the Airport Company to a third party operator for the provision of ground handling services for easyJet, is part of a much wider agreement for this service at other UK airports. It brings easyJet's operation at Liverpool in line with other Airports where all their ground handling needs are provided by the one company, bringing consistency with their own general terms and conditions throughout their UK network.
This switch of supplier will see an approximate 50% reduction in the amount of baggage handling provision by the Airport Company and as a consequence, the Airport has been forced to reduce the number of Ramp services staff and amend the shift patterns and hours of work of many of the remaining staff to reflect this change in business. The Airport Company will be looking for voluntary redundancies as well as working closely with the appointed third party ground handling company in an attempt to minimise net job losses as they in turn look to recruit additional staff.
The GMB Union who represent the majority of the Ramp Services staff at the Airport are currently working closely with the Airport Company to reduce the impact on its members and are hopeful that overall job losses can be kept to a minimum.
Passengers and airline operations will be unaffected by this change which is expected to be effective within the next few months.
Neil Pakey, Chief Executive of Peel Airports commented, “We are naturally concerned for those staff members affected by this decision, however we recognise that this change will bring a more seamless service for easyJet, bringing their Liverpool operation in line with other Airports across their network.
The Airport will be doing all it can to help redeploy these staff with the ground handling operator appointed to provide this service and keep net job losses to a minimum.
The good news is that the company appointed to provide these ground handling services will be looking to fill a number of positions for which many of the affected Airport Company staff will be well qualified and experienced to apply for.”
