If im PRIVATE hire why do the council force me to carry a big yellow door sign which (through beer goggles) actually says "taxi" to every drunk outside a pub or nightclub when the same council wouldnt require the door signs if i spent twice as much and bought an "executive" car (merc/jag)

If i wanted the attention of Mr and Mrs Pukeworthy outside Ratface (Ratfaeces?) club id have bought a "taxi"......

(why would PH rise 500% to cover a plate rise of £200 unless i only did 2 jobs a year?)

Welcome back Wannabee........and yes, Why up the basic pickup price by 500% for a licence that went up by around 40%...It just dont add up

Fuel has risen by 20% in a year, by that calculation PH rates should have gone up 400%, guess what, they havent

over the easter break derv has gone up from £1.16 to £1.21 making my weekly fuel bill £3.50 more per week next week than when the schools broke up.

thats a bigger worry than 1 LAs plate increase (where it would still be cheaper than some other LAs anyway, the PHs there seem oblivious to the many years cheap plates they have enjoyed)

the plate costs are tax deductable anyway (and include vat), so 39.5% of it is reclaimable if vat regd (inc 22% tax and 17.5% vat)

Where is your evidence that they all want a HC plate but not a WAV? :?

Here in Winchester there are 236 PH last count, not one of them has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.... If and when an H/C plate comes up for grabs, either wav or saloon due to withdrawal or retirement from the trade, the saloon plate will always be the 1st choice and goes within days because of the "resale value" of the saloon plate.
The wav plate will only go for the resale value of the vehicle as the plate is worth zero and they are two a penny therefore a wav is never ever the 1st choice...... :-|

I don't want a hack plate, theres no need . My Vechicle is a 8 seater Wav.
I don't work on a circuit . My rates are cheaper then the Radio companys, I probly give a better services as well. :-$

Well it's nice to know that some PH such as yourself can do this so I praise you for it, sadly in Winchester it's not the case, although I have heard there is a PH firm in nearby Eastleigh that do cater with wav's.....

I think you'll find that is because saloons are so much cheaper to run and maintain than a WAV. Let's be honest here the necessity for a WAV isn't because of the work it creates it's because the law so it has to be. How many taxi drivers, given the choice between purpose built or saloon vehicle, would opt for the purpose built vehicle.

which means the HCs have 100% of the wheelchair market, so are they grumbling?

to me PH will always mean "pirate hire" as that what they originally were.....

Before 1847 surely all was 'pirate hire' :? There are as many in the HC trade as in the PH trade that flout the law and regulations, except for me of course, I polish my halo every morning and every evening O:)

Probably why enforcement and licensing came in for the horse and hansom cab, therefore "Hackney" cabs and so on.....
I do agree that the trades needs a shake and wake up to weed out bad practice up and down the land, so nice to hear that you polish your ring, I mean halo often, as I polish my shoes and don't wear smelly dirty trainers!

What you seem to miss is the fact that Saloon H/C's and PH here and across the land are still allowed to discriminate against people who are wheelchair bound..... No one should have to wait for a wav when there isn't one available on a rank at any given time or turned down due to incompetency to cover such eventualities ... In my opinion no one should be able to use the excuse to indirectly disciminate against a wheelchair bound person just because their vehicle does not have the facility to accomodate which still happens regardless of the DDA and EA :-| The excuse for any PH or H/C or any public vehicle to not be wheelchair friendly or whatever disability friendly will become something in the past with the new up to date, easy access wav's now available on ranks and on the market. Discrimination is discrimination no matter what excuse is given..... I don't think it will happen in my time, but it will come.... :-|

and nobody should have to wait for a PH because they require a saloon because they are easier to access and more comfortable for them to travel in because there will never be a saloon available on a rank due to the over zealous LA.

What you're forgetting is PH isn't a public service vehicle it is as said a private hire

There offices are just under 3 miles away from the Sutton rank. There car & PH licensed by Birmigham are constantly parking on the cab rank when HC drivers have not moved up quickly enough & obstruct the front & rear of the rank constantly throughout the night.

That's not a problem that needs marshals to sort, it's a licensing enforcement problem.

So what you are saying then it is ok for PH and saloon H/C to not have wheelchair access (discriminatory!!) and that all wav's are terribly uncomfortable.... what a load of B*****Ks!!

The pros and cons are irrelavant, that's the way it is at present.

Me, I'm all for 100% compulsory taxi WAVs, and 100% PH saloons.

Give punters a choice.
