Thank you Captain for putting up that press release, I'm reliably informed TDO got a similar statement e-mailed to Alex.

I think none of us should be shocked if at the end of this investigation the two officers either go off sick for six months, or resign to pursue their employment elsewhere.

However let's all hope the right thing is done, and if evidence of iffiness is discovered the police are contacted about such iffiness.

But FFS don't hold your breath.

As serious as this is if the police are not involved I believe the people concerned will just be moved to another department that doesn't lend itself to bribery, if such department exists

Trafford taxi licensing officers suspended in ‘cash-for-cab-licences’ probe

Two town hall taxi licensing officers have been suspended in a ‘cash-for-cab-licences’ probe.

The pair – who work for Trafford council – were suspended this week after a formal complaint from within the trade, the M.E.N. understands.

It is believed the town hall probe relates to payments allegedly made by applicants who had failed part of the application process. It is believed the investigation has been ongoing for several weeks. Police are also investigating whether any criminal activity has taken place.

A licence for either a black cab or private-hire vehicle costs £128. Drivers must prove they are fit and proper to drive a taxi, including passing a police criminal records check and a medical. All potential drivers are also meant to pass the ‘knowledge’ test – a rigorous series of questions based on their memory of Trafford’s roads.

The council has passed details of its investigation to detectives at Trafford CID.

A council spokesman said: “Two members of staff from the council’s licensing team have been suspended to allow an investigation to be conducted in accordance with the council’s procedures. Because this is an ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to provide any further details at this stage.”

A police spokesman said: “Greater Manchester Police has been contacted by Trafford council about an ongoing investigation they are carrying out.

I'm glad to see the police involved....this thing could have all manner of implications.

private hire operators / potential rapists / people giving bribes being fit and proper?

Trafford Council need to act quickly.....if drivers have been licensed who paid a bung.....then they aint fit and proper and need their licenses revoked.

We dont know how deep this thing is....or how long its been going on for.

What have private hire got to do with it? I'd have thought the only license worth bribing somebody for would be a taxi drivers license

Maybe the same operators of PH....who like paying £500 for a rumanian found a cheaper alternative?

Well I guess we'll have to wait and see whether it is indeed a PH that would rather pay £300 then pay £500 for a Romanian. Do the PH have to do a knowledge test?

Trafford Council taxi licence inquiry: Two men arrested

Two men have been arrested as part of an investigation into irregularities at Trafford Council's licensing department.

A 51-year-old and a 54-year-old were arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and remain in custody.

The investigation followed allegations that staff accepted payments to issue taxi licences quickly.

Trafford Council's Peter Molyneux claimed there were "robust safeguarding procedures with regards to licences".

Mr Molyneux, corporate director for environment, transport and operations, said the continuing investigation was "being taken extremely seriously" by the council.

A source told the BBC there had been allegations that "bungs of up to £300" had been taken by licensing staff to issue documents before the administrative process had been completed.

Trafford Council charges £184.50 for a private hire or Hackney cab licence and the council's website states driver checks and administration should take up to eight weeks from the receipt of an application.
