I have not got the full online version yet - Council to return £1.1m to the Cities taxi drivers who have been overcharged on license fees, since May 2009. It is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £390 and £600 per driver.
As others have been saying for a long time. Councils must set the fees for these licenses "On the basis that it only recovers costs which it is entitled statutorily to recover" they have obviously overstepped the line.
They are also facing two judicial reviews both to be heard on June 19th - I would assume that is to do with the charge that they lamped us with regarding charging us for Taxi Marshalls.
Do you have any link to the full details John, I would be very grateful for any information that is available.
It is all very sketchy at the moment, totally lacking in transparency of which leaves me thinking - If they have voluntarily owned up to £1.1 mil, you can bet your bottom dollar that with proper scrutiny there is more in the pot. It was only a bit of thinking by myself that set the "Interest" issue off (a sum of money that they did not come clean about), the guy who had started it all off, has got more serious stuff on his plate re legal costs, so easily not on his agenda.
I will be pursuing further questions as the money is not automatically being returned to the drivers! The drivers have been sent a claim form to sign and return (with the added - this covers all claims!!) however if for example a driver has passed on/moved out of the area/country/retired, so on and so on, then the money plus interest is going to stay with the council - in my book that is not right.
If I get anything then you are more than welcome to it - is there anything specific?
