You can get it at Newtown st Boswells from the fuel supplier, or from the tractor sales at Stow.

The best way is to let the government know that we know first, then ask for a card that only taxis can use to obtain a duty discount at point of sale, from any forecourt

The advantage of this to HMRC is that they would know exactly how much fuel you were using, and if anyone cheats and allows someone else to use their card, tax will be expected on all the fuel used

If anyone can square the circle preventing anyone from becoming a taxi or private hire driver or any job description that would or should be allowed to take advantage of fuel concessions then that will be the first hurdle crossed.

Really?

I kind of thought that the reason even rural stations didn't stock it was because vehicles using the red diesel could only use the public roads for certain tightly controlled purposes, so if they popped in for a fill up then that would be outside the exemption.

Thus any filling station stocking red diesel would be a bit of a giveaway.

dunno...thats why we have so many Huge Tractors running on red Diesel pulling even Huger HGV sized trailers at speeds Approaching those of HGVs...so they can ferry their goods around at a fraction of the Price of the Hauliers. and its these bloody big machines that are driven by 17 yr olds that dont even need a car licence that causes so many accidents on rural and semi-rural roads.

I wrote to my MP (which is a bit like washing a hanky by hand  :x )

His response:-

All road users have been hit by the strong rise in oil prices over the last year, which underpinned the Government’s decision on 16 July to keep the rates of duty on road fuels frozen for the rest of the tax year. When the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, made this announcement, he said, "the global credit crunch and sharp rises in world oil prices have pushed up prices at the pump. Today's decision will help motorists and businesses get through what is a difficult time for everyone. However research with the House of Commons Library reveals that the Government have not considered the taxi sector as in need of special treatment.

Looking at Parliamentary Questions over the last year, concerns about the taxi sector have focused on other matters – such as ensuring accessibility for disabled persons, or the licensing system for private hire vehicles, in connection with new measures related to stretched limousines and unlawful vehicles.[1]

The Government has long resisted calls from another section of road users, the haulage sector, to provide special tax relief, in the form of a rebate on fuel taxes.[2] Moreover, the Government’s recent announcement of a package of measures to cut energy use and tackle fuel poverty illustrates the wide impact of oil price rises, and the competing demands for Exchequer funds to mitigate these costs.[3]
