hate to tell you this but many of us have tachographs in our vehicles now.

Meters.

Mine dosen't tell anyone how long I've been on shift does yours then?

other than the part of the meter you can clear yourself, there is another hidden part available in the meter where it all totals up, but would need software or a reader to see it all, but would this show "time"

Well meters can and do record record a good deal of information, but at the moment there's no official control on the data, thus from the point of view of using it as a control mechanism they're useless at the moment.

Of course, there is control over the fare aspect, but even that's a bit dodgy at times, since in many areas rates can still be changed at will or extras piled on indiscriminately.

Indeed, that's comes back to the central problem with tachos - they'd benefit the cheats and penalise the honest.

Ours had to be time locked becuase some individuals were charging tariff 2 during the day! Now they go onto t2 at midnight and switch to t1 at 6am.

Of course if the time on the meter is wrong it defetes the object really doesn't it?

Yes, and we had the example from Edinburgh a couple of years ago when the festive season rates had clearly been programmed incorrectly and this wasn't spotted because the council obviously hadn't checked them.

Of course, it's easy to check the various rates if they can be adjusted at will, but not so easy if it's a calendar meter.

Can't say I noticed that one, but I got fed counting a year or two ago after the first few hundred.

Very good question JD, but not sure many of us are going to like this answer.

Not the answer we wanted IMO
