Taxi licence fee hike 'suicidal'

A dramatic hike in license fees for taxi and private hire drivers in East Lothian will be "suicidal" for the trade.

That was the verdict of Dave Smith, chairman of the East Lothian Motor Hirers' Association at a meeting in Haddington.

He slammed East Lothian Council's Licensing Sub-Committee for rubberstamping plans to increase application fees for various licensees.

In particular, Mr Smith was furious at the decision to more than double private hire car license fees – from £79.25 to £187.50.

He was also angry that license renewal fees had jumped from £30 to £50.

He added: "In light of recent fuel and insurance increases, I feel that to put the fees up at this given time would be suicidal.

Not if you want to legally work the same area you work now.

Don't people realise that they can't use the fuel increase to defend their position when the price of fuel has been coming down for a while now.

Copy sent to Edinburgh's councillors.

£1205 to apply for a taxi operator's licence in the cesspit of a place called Edinburgh.

What do you get for this? And what do you get back when the council deny the application, as the corrupt brown envelope receiving SNP and Labour scumbags are pre-programmed to do? Nothing.

How does Colin Keir sleep at night? He's the convener of Edinburgh's Regulatory Committee. He denies licences. Yet vulnerable members of the public, females, get into unlicensed vehicles because they can't get a taxi, and they think they're getting into a private hire, and are happy to do so.

And they are raped. Colin Keir is responsible for these females being raped. Because Colin Keir, aided and abetted by Jim Inch, restricts the number of available taxis. Will Keir tell us all now how much is in a brown envelope? What other explanation is there for restricting taxi licences, when the council haven't issued any new ones for 7 years? Imagine, no increase in demand for 7 years.

Nice to know that the council promotes it's own public enterprises as along as their taxi competition are restricted.

Isn't Colin Keir a scumbag. And if it was his daughter being raped?

And the rest of the council? Would they be happy for their daughter to be raped, just as long as Colin Keir and his cronies are allowed to restrict taxis, because Jim Inch says that is how it should be, and the rest of the councillors are too lazy or too weak to question the "policy".? And the alleged lawyer known as Robert Millar works his butt off to make it so?

Isn't City of Edinburgh Council corrupt with their policy to restrict taxis?

But, how much longer can it go on? Another rape? They can no longer say they are not aware of the danger. Because I am telling them

Next time it will be they who are directly responsible. And I will be holding them to account. They WILL be pursued for legal redress. because they will have been aware and chosen not to address the problem.

The chickens are coming home to roost.

Dear Mr Taylor

I will start my email by saying that I am not a member of the Regulatory Committee and therefore may not be completely up to speed with all the taxi licence issues. What I did wish to raise with you, however was that at the time that the issue of restricting the numbers of taxi licences was last discussed, the Conservative Group did call for the cap to be removed and for market conditions to set the number of licences in the city. Details of our amendment can be found here:

http://cpol.edinburgh.gov.uk/getdoc_ext ... cId=104027

Yours sincerely

Councillor Gordon Buchan
Scottish Conservative Councillor for Fountainbridge / Craiglockhart Ward

Jim, why don't you say what you really mean. It's not like you to pull your punches.

Hope you're not going soft . . . .

the whole bloody council is full of vested intrests or competition.
no wonder they voted for the motion.
doesnt matter though.
market forces are at work anyway.
if theres no money in it for the driver then they will leave the trade and leave the owners up sheet creek  then they can come along and buy in for peanuts, or simply put in an application.
so for what its worth the tides on the turn.
bowt time to

Aye, you may be right. Just as you were right in the past.

If the rest of the trade had just half of your balls, it would be one hell of a trade.

Aye there is.

Don't let the doom mongers tell you otherwise.

Edinburgh is booming all the way to Christmas. We're in the land of plenty. Booming economy.

Leastways the council hasn't told us otherwise

Anyway don't confuse your courage "balls" with your actual sphericals. I may admire the former, but would have serious nightmares contemplating the latter.

More information than I need to think about, best left for Mrs T.

Well here's the council's response:-

Mr Taylor

Please be aware that following your e-mails yesterday to a range of Council staff, your e-mail account has been blocked from further communication to the Council.

That's the quality of government for you.

Rather than address the problem one is banned, pesumably for the use of unparliamentary language.

Or was it for asking how Colin Keir can live with himself if another female is raped because he restricts taxis.

Or the way that council officials conduct themselves in pursuit of this policy to restrict taxis. Actions which have been biased with no real consideration of the argument.

or did it hurt the sensitivities of the councillors who surely know that they have been ineffectual, disinterested and will be cuplable in the event of another rape?

Christmas is a long period. There's lots ot drink flowing. The risk to the public is palpable.

Banning me from bringing these matters to the councillors' attention will not prevent another incident.

City of Edinburgh Council is walking a tightrope.

Now, if what I said was wrong, then I can assume that I will be receiving a summons in the near future, either for defamation, or for not being a fit and proper person to hold a taxi driver's licence.

Nice one.
