SAFE-SEX DRIVE: ComCab driver Jill Sutherland and sexual health specialist Ambreen Butt. Raymond Besant

REVELLERS using an Aberdeen taxi firm to go home after a night out in the city are to be given free condoms as part of an initiative to tackle the number of sexually transmitted diseases.

From Monday – World Aids Day – anyone using a ComCab taxi after 9pm will have access to free condoms.

Grampian World Aids Day Committee initiated the scheme with support from NHS Grampian, in a bid to cut the number of people who contract HIV or a sexually transmitted infection from having unprotected sex.

Since January there have been 33 new cases of HIV reported in Grampian, and a recent survey has revealed a strong link between the incidence of HIV and STIs and binge drinking.

Dr Steve Baguley, who conducted the research, said: “The survey demonstrated the link between alcohol consumption and risky sex. Heavy drinkers were more likely to have symptoms of an infection. If you cut down on alcohol you are less likely to get pregnant unintentionally and less likely to catch an infection. We know that people do not always carry condoms with them and some people have never even tried them, but they are the best defence.”

Graeme Murray, taxi fleet services manager at the firm, added: “We are delighted to be associated with the initiative in conjunction with NHS Grampian.”

An evaluation of the pilot, which will include feedback from taxi drivers, will determine if the scheme should be rolled out across the region.

I've been with com cabs for years now and do nights and have heard nothing from com cabs regarding this!!! Maybe management should keep them to themselves!

What in Hells name is Grampians World aids Day Committee all about....do they need a committee to get Involved on the rest of the worlds Aids problems....and besides if its Just for one day will it make and differance to Some little HIV riddled Bairn in downtown Nairobi??

I could understand Grampian Aids awareness but with an eye to it covering every day of the year.

I might be Jaded but when i picture this Committee I envisage a group of Lottery funded bearded do-gooding intelligentia liberalites with nothing better to do than spend their time Between this committee and that committee, things like the Committee on "Economic change in Sub Saharan Africa", the Committee on "Increasing funds for useless Causes"....and the Local Library.

These same people are people that get their rocks off by becoming members of as many committees as they can cram in to a week. quite often they are the semi retired 40 somethings who have had to retire early from teaching due to stress or other similar posts and whom have creamed gold plated pensions from us poor Council tax Contributors..

if they can come up with this kinda nonsense they sadly have way to much time on their hands.....im sure they wont see it that way of course as all they will can see is their over bloated expenses claim to cover their costs of all the committees they have to attend..they are no more than career committee members....

Its enough to make ya spit..

It is more about promoting condoms than any thing else that is published, if a few more people start to buy them after trying them for free - then I guess the company concerned will come into some extra profit.
