17 out 20 taxis not roadworthy

ALMOST all taxis targeted in a sting by police and licensing chiefs were found to be defective, results have revealed.

Out of 20 cabs targeted in areas including Measham and Ashby by officers and North West Leicestershire District Council licensing officers, 17 were declared not roadworthy.

Ten were given prohibition orders by the Vehicle and Operators Services Agency (VOSA) due to serious defects and five had their licence plates suspended by the council.

Vehicle defects included bald tyres, worn brakes, oil leaks, power steering fluid leak, broken brake lights and panel damage.

One driver was found to be driving a licensed cab without holding a valid taxi driver licence.

The spot-checks were carried out in town centres late at night to have the maximum impact on those operators breaking the law.

John Bridges, the district council's portfolio holder for environment, said: "This is a great example of the police and district council working together to make travelling by taxi safer.

"The initiative is part of a proactive policy towards enforcement.

"We intend to carry out similar checks regularly and, where taxis are unsafe, appropriate enforcement action will be taken."

North West Leicestershire local policing unit Inspector Chris Brown said: "This operation was designed to make sure unlicensed and dangerous taxis were not driving around.

"I am disappointed that 17 of the 20 taxis were found to have some defects, 10 of them serious, and I hope that this enforcement action sends out a strong message to taxi drivers that it is not acceptable to carry passengers in vehicles that are unfit to be on the road."

That hints that they went after known transgressors.

They certainly wouldnt be after the Transgenders or they might have the weight of the Chief Constable bearing down on them
