Taxi driver attacked and robbed in Burnley

A TAXI driver was assaulted and robbed of his takings by a trio of thugs in the latest attack on a Burnley cabbie.

The 52-year-old man was picking up a fare in Scarlett Street, off Coalclough Lane, at around 3am today when he was set upon by three men.

One of the men then stole £60 from the driver's takings in the taxi before the three made off.

Detectives were today interviewing the cabbie in a bid to get a fuller picture of what happened in the early-hours attack.

And they also launched a witness appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time.

One of the offenders is described as being white, around 5ft 6ins, aged 21 to 22 and slim. He was wearing a dark-coloured hooded jacket.

The attack is the latest on a cabbie in the town this year. Taxi leaders have previously called on Burnley Council and police to do more to protect drivers from assaults and robberies.

Anyone with information should contact Burnley CID on 01282 472144 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
