Safer signs for Elmbridge taxis and mini-cabs

Elmbridge Council has announced plans to ensure that taxis and mini-cabs in the borough will become easier for the public to identify and safer to use.

Over the next 12 months, larger, square licence plates are being introduced for taxis and private hire vehicles, as licences are renewed.

The council said the new plates would be easier to see and read, helping passengers who may have a complaint or a member of the public concerned about the way a vehicle is being driven.

The council also announced that the plates would have a more prominent Elmbridge Council logo, so the public know exactly where to direct inquiries or complaints.

The plates are recyclable and each year only a replaceable licence insert has to be changed - instead of the old embossed plates where the entire plate had to be replaced on re-licensing. This means the plates are better for the environment, as well as being cheaper in the long run.

Councillor Chris Elmer, chairman of the council’s licensing committee, said: “I welcome these changes, which will make it easier for the public to identify our licensed taxis and minicabs, as well as more convenient for the licensees and kinder to the environment.

“These improvements are part of the council’s ongoing policy of improving our licensing services to both licensees and residents.”

Bernie Lyons, of Albion Cars in Walton, welcomed the changes.

She said: “We are very happy with the new licence plates as now the public can be confident they are getting into a properly licensed vehicle. We are also pleased to do our bit to help protect the environment.”
