But I bet that view isn't shared by some, especially the thick in Hove.

However, Mr Gray said some drivers have said they would be unwilling to fork out the £500 needed to fit the system in their cabs.

I think whilst some are unwilling to pay for it some will be unable to pay for it. If there are schemes available to help with payments that would be a start.

This would appear to be a contradiction in terms

When you see figures of between £200 and £500 mentioned for a cctv system you have to ask yourself is it worth it, especialy when the councils want to promote the expensive one, you wonder if they have an intrest in the company.

Wouldn't you have thought that this meeting of minds bunch would have come up with an application to the DfT to make CCTV optional at the discretion of taxi proprietors. Perhaps such a request is too sensible for the mindless bunch?

Best practice is in favour of CCTV but best practice isn't law and what we need is law because many councils couldn't give a chit about best practice.

tough luck, it's a fantastic idea, i'm sure their council will provide some sort of assisstance towards the cost, most do, and some are unable to pay?? oh the poor taxi driver bit, they could find the money, and anyeays, it'd all be offset via the taxman, so what's the problem??

Whilst it maybe tough luck and a fantastic idea IMO there will not be that many councils prepared to provide funding for the protection of taxi drivers. I believe some will provide funding for HC's who lets be honest already have some protection with the seperate compartment from the passenger but not the PH. With regards to playing the poor taxi driver bit not all taxi drivers are in areas that are busy and not all drivers earn enough to have money left over after they have paid their bills etc. Earnings are always at the mercy of your outgoings so it's not a matter of playing the 'poor taxi driver'. IMO it's a very assuming and ignorant attitude if you think all taxi drivers have nothing better to do with their money. I think it's going to be a balancing act to get this right with the needs of the taxi driver, the requirements of the council and the financing all round.

Why do you think it's a scam?

I have bad vibes when ever anyone offers the taxi/PH trade something for nothing.

In fact it would be better if the gov gave all the money spent on free NVQs, to finance free CCTVs.

That would raise standards as there would be perfect evidence to rid iffy drivers from the trade, and of course help convict scum punters.

its odd that a trade where "london" cabs can have a shield between driver and passengers, and the driver neednt wear a seatbelt simply due to the chances of being attacked is so half-hearted about a security CCTV being fitted....

How do you propose that the film be collected to rid iffy drivers from the trade. Do you perhaps think that drivers would hand in the footage for inspection every week. IMO it would be far better not to let iffy drivers into the trade in the first place. As I keep saying it is far too easy to become a taxi driver and I also believe that the NVQ does not go far enough.

Lets understand this correctly it is not something for nothing it is something that is being offered for a short period of time to current drivers to bring them up to the same standard as new drivers in so far as qualifications are concerned. The government understand that experience speaks volumes so they have allocated an amount of money to get the experienced qualified. IMO this funding will stop within a few years and then every taxi driver will have to pay it for themselves. Years of experience does not create good customer service some taxi drivers have a disgraceful attitude and should not be let within 10 feet of the public. On the whole the public are ok with taxi drivers it is a minority that spoils it and vice versa
