Cabbie’s jail sentence is suspended

A DRUNK cabbie who attacked his former girlfriend before almost causing a crash has avoided jail.

David Ogilvie threatened and grabbed Sharon Harris before locking her into a room at the caravan where he was living in Thorney Bay Road, Canvey.

Ogilvie, 52, a private hire driver who has had his licence suspended by Basildon Council, later grabbed her and put her in his car, telling her he was driving her home.

As the defendant, who had been drinking, sped and swerved along the A130 he shouted abuse at the victim.

When Ms Harris begged him to slow down he replied: “If I am going to die, you are going to die with me!”

The terrified woman then watched in horror as Ogilvie drove at a car, which was travelling in front, which was being driven by a police officer.

Fortunately the vehicle changed lanes and avoided a crash.

Yesterday at Basildon Crown Court, Ogilvie was banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to attend a domestic violence programme.

Judge Christopher Mitchell sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He was also given an 18 months supervision order. The judge told him: “You pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on a former partner.

“You have already been cautioned by police in respect of your conduct towards her.

“In those circumstances, to my mind, this is a case which passes the custody threshold.

“However, bearing in mind your age and previous good character, apart from that caution and an earlier caution, I am going to suspend it.”

At an earlier hearing, Ogilvie admitted two counts of common assault, dangerous driving and drink driving.

Chris Johnson, a spokesman for Basildon Council, added: “We suspended the driver’s license immediately following the offence.”
