Wakefield plans to check foreign taxi drivers are shelved

A CONTROVERSIAL move to force Wakefield taxi drivers born outside the UK to provide character references from their country of origin has been shelved.

Wakefield Council told drivers they had to provide Certificates of Good Character from their country of birth, regardless of how long they had lived in the UK.

The new checks, announced earlier this month, came on top of existing Criminal Records Bureau checks and were designed to pick up any criminal activity from outside the UK.

But at a meeting of the newly-formed Wakefield and District Private Hire Association last Thursday, council bosses were accused of 'bully boy' tactics after not properly consulting drivers over the move.

Members of the association felt the move was unfair on asian drivers who had moved to Wakefield decades ago after being born abroad.

Dave Walker, Wakefield Council's service manager for legal and democratic services, agreed that the policy would put on hold until a further consultation had taken place.
