Grants for jobless ‘ruin taxi drivers’livelihoods’

BYLINE: Eva Marie Gibney

JOBLESS workers are receiving grants of up to €1,000 to become cabbies even though the Dublin taxi scene is already at saturation point.

The news comes despite the fact that there are already 14,000 registered taxi drivers operating in Dublin, more than the number of yellow cabs in New York City.

Before deregulation in November 2000 there were 2,722 taxi cabs on the streets of Dublin and 3,900 nationwide.

Now the figure in Dublin is 14,000 with approximately 21,500 regulated taxi drivers nationwide. And more are being recruited every week.

Taxi chiefs have claimed the business isbeing ‘brought to its knees’ by thousands more illegal taxis plying for hire throughout the State.

Under a back-to-work scheme, the Department of Social and Family Affairs is issuing grants of up to €1,000 to break into the industrywith jobseekers also allowed to retain their social welfare payments ona reducingscale for four years.

NationalTaxi Drivers Union president Tommy Gorman said it was ‘impossible’ to make a living nowadays in this ‘saturated taxi market’. He said encouraging job seekers to enter the industry was compounding the problem.

He called on the Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Mary Hanafin, to meet the union to discuss the explosion in cab numbers in Dublin.

Fine Gael transport spokesman Fergus O’Dowd said that while he supported retraining the unemployed, i t-was-pointless putting them in an industry that was already oversupplied.

A spokesman for the Department of Social and Family Affairs said: ‘A person in receipt of a social welfare payment who decides to set up as a self employedtaxi operator may be eligible to-apply for the back-to-work enterpriseallowance provided the qualifying criteria for scheme are fulfilled.’

I'm PH and de-regulation is the worse thing that ever happened here. Lets be honest if they can get them off the dole they don't care what effect it has on other people so long as the figures look good
