Warnings over rogue taxi drivers

A taxi boss and a passenger have warned people to beware of being charged excessive amounts for taxi rides over Christmas and New Year.

Self-employed ground worker Paul Haywood, 45, of Dean Crescent, Kitt Green, was shocked to discover that one cab ride from Kitt Green to the centre of Wigan earlier this month cost him £10 – for a trip of just a couple of miles.

He also said he was stunned to be charged a fee of £50 return from Kitt Green to his Christmas party at Ormskirk golf course.

He said: "We are being encouraged to leave our cars at home, but the price of taxis is ridiculous.

"To go from the Heinz factory to Wigan town centre with the 25% charge after midnight cost £10, and it's three miles at the absolute tops.

"If I'd known what it was going to cost to go to the Christmas do I would have driven there.

"Me and my girlfriend used to go out a lot, but if I was to go out now on New Year's Eve it would end up costing me about £40 in taxis to go six miles with the double time. There's just no incentive to leave your car at home.

"The price of diesel had come down 30% recently, but there's no chance of the fares coming down before Christmas.

"I can't blame the drivers for trying to make a bit extra at this time of year – anyone would probably do the same in their position – but it needs to be a bit more tightly controlled."

Wigan Hackney cab driver Ronnie Melling said: "I think it's possible that the £10 charge might have been due to a rogue taxi driver.

"Not all taxi drivers are honest, like all members of the public are not honest.

"You should always take down the plate and badge number and report it to the council if you believe you have been overcharged.

"We've not had an increase in our rates since March and fuel is still a lot higher than it was in March, plus the cost of living is still rising.

"We can't just change the rates as fuel prices change because the changes are so expensive to bring in.

"The council has to advertise it in the paper and all the meters have to be changed."
