New age policy for private hire vehicles

http://www.sloughobserver.co.uk/articles/1/7984

A NEW age policy has been adopted for private hire vehicles by councillors.

Members agreed to revoke the original decision made by the licensing committee in November, which resolved to make no changes to the age policy, but left inconsistencies between private hire and Hackney Carriage vehicles.

The policy was introduced to match that of Hackney Carriages, in order to reduce those inconsistencies that have caused tension in the past.

Members agreed to a total of eight recommendations, including:

- Any vehicle being licensed for the first time to be less than five years of age (from the date of first registration)

- Once licensed, a vehicle can be kept until it reaches a maximum of nine years of age (from the date of first registration)

- Six-monthly testing required when a vehicle reaches six years.

The decision was made at a full council meeting on December 16.
