New powers for police to hack your PC: civil liberties groups raise alarm over extension of surveillance without warrant

Independent, January 5, 2009, 9

Civil liberties groups have criticised plans, agreed in principle by European ministers in December 2008, to allow police to carry out remote searches of suspects' computers across the EU. The Home Office has also given the police powers to hack into personal computers without a court warrant. Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, argues the new powers should be regulated by an Act of Parliament.

Private firm may track all email and calls: "Hellhouse" of personal data will be created, warns former DPP

Guardian, December 31, 2008, 1

The Home Secretary is to publish a consultation paper in January 2009 which will offer the option of private sector monitoring of calls, emails, texts and internet use. The proposal to create a "superdatabase" for monitoring the public would be tempered with additional safeguards aimed at preventing leaks and the accidental loss of data. The proposal has been strongly criticised by Sir Ken Macdonald, former director of public prosecutions, who has stated they would create a "hell house" of personal private information.
