Transport plan for Mablethorpe hits a setback THERE has been a setback for plans by Tony Finnemore to introduce a fleet of up to six three-wheel taxis - known as tuk tuks - to Mablethorpe. The vehicles are popular in many parts of Asia - not least because there eco-friendly and can cover up to 65 miles per gallon of petrol. But, at a meeting of East Lindsey's general licensing committee, members refused to approve their use either for private hire or as hackney carriages. Prior to the discussions, several members - including Coun Phil Leivers - had the opportunity to sit in one of the vehicles which was parked outside Tedder Hall. Coun Leivers was not impressed, complaining about the lack of width in the bench-style seats and his difficulty in fastening the seat belts Similar misgivings were sounded by Coun Mick Horton who feared for the safey of users "If two pasengers had had a couple of beers, they could be rocking and rolling all over the place,"he said. "They could fall out. The vehicles could overturn." A more positive note was sounded by Coun Ken Milner and Coun Julia Pears who both thought the tuk tuks would be an attraction which could bost tourism "They look flimsy - but no one would hire one to go to Heathrow Airport," said Coun Milner. Several members of the public, including Mary Morris of Mablethorpe Tourism Association, attended the meeting in order to support Mr Finnemore who is an experienced taxi driver and boss of the firm, Street Kars. Also present was Dale Firkins whose firm, Warwickshire-based Green Conversions, imports about 200 of the vehicles a year from India, then adapts them for the UK market. "They're quichk, cheap and efficient," he insisted. But the committee also noted the influential observations of ELDC's head of licensing, Adrian Twiddy, who said: "In my opinion, they are entirely unsuitable." Following the meeting, Mr Finnemore said he would consider his options which include lodging an appeal at the magistrates' court. |

Oh please do. I'm sure there are folks on here that could send the council as much evidence as they wish. And of course all this wont matter soon when good old 'type' approval comes in.

So would Polar Bears be a Tourist attraction...you wouldnt stick em on city streets though would you!! |
