Rise will go ahead despite Bradford drivers' change of heart




Bradford’s taxi drivers will increase charges by 50p from Monday – despite agreeing to freeze rises until later in the year.

The move follows a request from the Bradford Hackney Carriage Owners’ Association to up the flag rate from £1.50 to £2. Distance-related increments will remain the same.

Since applying to Bradford Council to change the flag rate, the association has had a change of heart and fears losing customers if fares increase.

The Council has confirmed the application has been formally approved and the new fare must take effect from Monday.

Taxi drivers must have their meters reset by next Friday or face having their licence suspended or prosecution for displaying the incorrect prices.

The association’s president C D Khalid told the Telegraph & Argus that the organisation had e-mailed the Council stating it did not want to increase the prices any more, but it was too late.

“Drivers are not happy about it, but they don’t want to risk losing their licence or income,” he said.

He said the reason for the increase was partly due to a Council decision in October to up the fees for licensing a taxi by 35 per cent after no change for a decade.

Ian Bairstow, strategic director of environment and neighbour-hoods, said: “The trade could make a formal application to have the fares reduced if they wish.

“Alternatively, drivers have the discretion to reduce the fare by the 50 pence per journey if they wish to do so but the meters must read the correct approved fare.”

Mr Khalid said drivers would not be making a formal application or knocking 50p off the fare as it would cause confusion.

If they dont put them up and keep the old tariff sheet displayed how can they be displaying the wrong prices.

is there any case law on this apart from the meter one where a company was allowed to continue charging the old fares as it was deemed to be not over charging

You must display the correct table of fares I think.

The table of fares and the meter is what is set by the LA but surely this can be discounted by the driver if so wished. If that is the case then there is nothing to stop them advertising the fact that they offer a discount on the regulated fare is there

Curzon Case.....they dont have to display the council tarrif on their meter, provided its cheaper than the councils rate.

For a vehicle to pass the annual test in our borough, it must have the meter calibrated to the council fare. When there is a change in tariff you have 28 days to provide a certificate from Pitts taximeters confirming that the meter has been changed or your plate is removed.
