Taxi driver issues warning after scam trip to London

A TAXI driver who was conned into driving to London and forking out £80 on computer disks on a fake fare is warning others to be on their guard.

Mark Jarman lost out after receiving a fake telephone call asking him to act as a courier service to pick up some computer disks in Wembley.

Now Mr Jarman, 44, of Elgar Way, Stamford, said: "I had no reason to be concerned that there was something wrong at all as we have done that sort of thing for small businesses in Stamford before.

"In the future it will be the money upfront, either pay me the money first or the job won't get done."

Mr Jarman was covering the phones at Silver Cabs in Stamford last month when he received a call at 6.30pm from a Mr Hill who said he was updating the till computers at the Marks & Spencer store in Peterborough.

Mr Jarman was told the team had been let down by a courier and needed the disks before 3am. He set off from Stamford at 7pm and was told to call Mr Hill when he was five minutes away from offices next to Wembley Stadium to arrange for someone to pop down with the disks to save parking.

And while on route to London, Mr Jarman received another call from Mr Hill who said his bank card was not being accepted and could he pay for the disks and he would get the money back.

Mr Jarman arrived in London and met the man with the disks and handed over the money for them.

He returned to Peterborough at about 10pm and waited at the drop-off point, near Bridge Street, but realised he had been conned after trying to contact Mr Hill for nearly 20 minutes.

Lincolnshire police spokesman James Newall said: "It is not uncommon for taxi drivers to get calls from companies asking them to act as couriers so it is fairly understandable that this particular taxi driver did not have a problem with accepting the job."

He advised taxi, courier and deliver firms to check if jobs were genuine by contacting the company.
