There was a public enquiry today held by the traffic commissioner Joan Aiken.
This was to do with the shambles that the council made of the new tariffs.
She started of by congratulating the council for being on top of there game in getting every thing done and dusted within the time scale allowed
But as the meeting went on she found even she could not work out how the council came up with the tariff
She also pointed out the anomaly between the 4 and 6 seat tariffs stating that both flags should be the same at £2.00 and not have £1.00 difference of £3.00, when the meters clicks go in £0.10 for 4 and £0.15 for the 6
she pointed out there was an extra £0.50 burden on the public using the 6 seater's after 10 PM as the meter starts at £4.50 and the 4 seats start at £3.00
She questioned the council as to why we still have zones when its one council and expressed her disapproval and stated that the council should look again at the zones
She said that for EG if a punter wanted to go from Galashiels to Hawick how would they be charged, she was informed that as the pick up went out of the zone the fare could be negotiated, she was informed that all meters in the Borders where set to the same rate and she replied that drivers should have there meters on from A to B in the whole of the Borders area, as they are licenced by one council then reiterated about the removal of zones

I thought it was about Tarrifs...so why did she go off at a tangent about zones ?

But I like the zones..its all one Region but it isnt all one county, but as its one region let them use the meter for cross zone journeys but still keep that element of protection the Zones currently off for ranking and hailing, if they ditch the zones all border taxis will hone in on the others traditional areas at peak times and that'll just screw it up for the small operator and enourage the fleet operators to send there quiet drivers everywhere just to try and keep a vehicle paying....

logically the next step in Ms atkins argument is that seeing as all the regions are in scotland why not just have a Scottish Licencing authority so Taxis can go from say Galashiels via Hawick to Kilmarnock and still be on the meter...its all just a matter of scale...Zone...Region...Country...whats the differance??? and then take it another step up as we are all part of the UK lets take it national...!!

My question was why? when she was there to review tariffs did she start on the subject of Zones.

I asked a simple question of how she went from subject of Tarrifs to to the subject of Zones if she was there to discuss the Subject of Shambolic Tarrifs. No where in skips original mention of the public enquiry did it mention that it was also about Zones…maybe it was..maybe it wasn’t..but it didn’t say it was. As for Zones im not really that bothered either way, more so as most Taxis in the region do not seem to take much notice of them anyway. That said however, if I were given a choice Id rather see the zones stay as they are..just as like the majority of the regions other TAXI/PH operators in the region wanted to keep the zones at the time of the consultation. :?

Blood due to the complexity Einsteins theory in taxi tariffs, she was trying to ascertain how we charge using the 2 towns mentioned, when she was informed that we can set the fare outside our zone thats when she jumped on the fact we are one council area.
She asked why the zones where still in place and she was informed that they stemmed from the 4 old council boundaries that where in place when we where first licenced back in nineteen canteen, and that they had never been removed after the councils amalgamated
