Taxi fares to surge at weekends

Taxi fares in Wolverhampton will rise by 12 per cent at weekends from next month, licensing councillors ruled today. But price increases will be limited to four per cent in the week.

This follows protests by black cab drivers who feared elderly people would not be able to afford the “lifeline” service.

The plans to increase hackney fares have split the opinions of drivers, who are represented by two separate associations.

Members of the Taxi Owners Association (TOA), which represents around half the city’s 115 black cabs and has been running for 30 years, say a blanket 12 per cent increase in fares seven days a week would be fair because prices have not been raised since 2006.

But Wolverhampton Hackney Carriage Drivers Association (WHCDA) objected, resulting in today’s compromise.

The higher increase will see the cost of a seven-mile journey go up by £1.58 to £13.88, below the national average of £14.50. WHCDA chairman Nasim Ullah said: “A rise of 12 per cent is too much on weekdays. This service is a lifeline to the elderly.”

The rises, which come into force on February 6, mean taxi fares are still lower than Walsall, Dudley, West Bromwich and Birmingham
