Taxi drivers call for Mayor to resign

THE Mayor of North Lincolnshire was called on to leave his office by about 70 angry taxi drivers at a protest over out-of-town cabbies.

The protest was staged outside the Wortley Hotel last night where Mayor Ishaq Jawaid and the Bishop of Grimsby, the Rt Rev David Rossdale, attended the launch of the Street Pastors scheme.

Coun Jawaid, who is a member of the local taxi licensing committee, has owned premises on Frodingham Road, which have been used as a taxi office, for more than 20 years.

But, following an application from Preston-based taxi company AAA Taxis to relocate to the premises, local drivers fear their livelihoods are in jeopardy.

Coun Ishaq was met with cries of 'Out, out, out!' when he arrived in the mayoral car at the Wortley Hotel.

Javed Akter, a spokesman for the 196 members of the North Lincolnshire Taxi and Private Hire Association, said: "There is nothing stopping him letting his premises on Frodingham Road. But our argument is he is a Mayor and he is a councillor.

"At the end of the day he must look after local residents and local businesses and he should not be inviting other taxi firms in – we believe it is not good for the town."

Coun Jawaid declined to comment on last night's protests.

Why would a firm from Preston want to start in Scunthorpe?
