Mum's fear after baby driven away by taxi

A TAXI firm has apologised after one of its drivers pulled off from a house with a customer's baby still in the back. Teenage mum Casey Broomhall had caught the taxi from Burslem to her Cobridge home with Hanley-based Intercity on Friday.

But when she got out to open her front door, leaving seven-month-old son Tyler in the back of the taxi, the driver drove off. The driver, who has been given a verbal warning following the incident, returned five minutes later.

The 18-year-old mother-of-one said: "I had just come back from a child development course in Burslem. "When the taxi pulled up at my house I told the driver I would be two seconds while I went to open the door because I can't do it with Tyler in my arms. "I got out and as I turned back to the car the driver started driving off. "I thought I had lost my baby."

Casey, from Emery Street, added: "I ran into the house trying to find the phone number so I could call the company. "As I was looking for a phone I kept going to see if the taxi had come back. "It was only about five minutes before he came back, but it felt like two hours."

Company director Malcolm Beardmore, said the driver had not heard Casey. He said: "When the driver pulled up in the road outside her house, she got out of the car and shut the door. "The driver didn't hear Casey saying anything. "If he had heard her he wouldn't have gone.

"He had a wagon behind him and a car behind that and as the house is right on the corner of the street he was in the way. "It wasn't until he turned the corner that he saw the baby so he went around the block and then returned."

Mr Beardmore says the driver has never been the subject of a complaint before. He said: "I've had the driver in and he was very apologetic and upset. "We are all genuinely sorry for what happened. "The driver apologised at the time and we are looking to do an apology letter for Casey. "I've told the driver he should have checked there was nothing in the back before he pulled off."

She was probably more p!ssed off that the driver came back so quickly, she'd planned a night out and thought the driver would make an ideal babysitter.
