WISBECH: Taxi driver fuming after being fined £75 for dropping a cigarette in Peterborough

Story!

TAXI driver Susan Patrick found council staff would accept no ifs or butts when she dropped a cigarette in Peterborough.

Susan Patrick, from Wisbech, was given a £75 on the spot fine when Peterborough City Council staff spotted her dropping a cigarette on Bridge Street last Thursday.

The fine was reduced to £50 because Mrs Patrick, 46, of Elm, paid it within 21 days.

She said: "I apologised and offered to pick it up but they told me the council were taking a zero tolerance policy with litter louts.

"I saw a man smoking moments later and warned him not to drop his cigarette when he finished it. He told me he had been fined the week before.

"I'm not a litter lout. You have to drop a cigarette on the floor to put it out, and there were no bins around. I'll never go shopping in Peterborough again."

Her husband David said: "I'm furious. My wife was told she would face court action and a possible criminal record if she failed to pay her fine.

"With all the job losses going on many people won't be able to pay and will get a criminal record for dropping a cigarette."

Peterborough City Council publish CCTV images of people they catch dropping litter on the council website.

Cabinet member for environment, Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald said: "Peterborough City Council is determined to tackle those who blight our city.

"It not right that the vast majority should have to pay the additional cost of cleaning up after people who show no respect for the environment in which we live."

In contrast, Fenland District Council does not adopt a zero tolerance policy with littering.

A spokesman said: "If a council officer saw somebody dropping litter they would tell them not to do it. Fines are only for persistent offenders.

What was she Supposed to do wi a litten fag end.....she couldnt stub it out in her taxi ash tray or the fine would be Bigger, she couldnt throw it in a dustbin in case it started the Great fire of Peterborough, She couldnt stick it in her Pocket for fear setting her thatched roofing alight....the only option was to throw it down and stamp it out under foot.........better still.. she could have rammed it cold end first up the fag wardens Jaxy and watched in pleasure as he tried to extricate it hot end first...

A sensible smoker would have a stubbit in their pocket but then again 'sensible smoker' is a contradiction in terms

Is a cigarette end not litter when casually thrown down in the street?

If not, why not?

Is chewing gum not litter when disposed of in a similar casual way?

Take a look at a pavement near you. Disgusting, isn't it?

But if you are a smoker or a masticator of gum, (BTW what do they make that stuff out of?) if the product itself is not garbage in your opinion, what about the packaging? Is that not garbage either?

In my fair City all the City centre bins have a built in ash tray/ gum tray.

Are they used? Of course not.

Appeal the littering ticket and see where that gets you.

We have special gum bins in our town centre. I don't think they are used either.
