Taxi fares could rise

THE cost of running a taxi in Darlington is set to rise, and the increase could be passed on to customers.

Darlington Borough Council will meet next week to discuss increasing the costs for licensing a taxi in order to cover a deficit of £10,000.

The authority is seeking to raise vehicle licences by £20 and operating licences by £25, both per year.

Despite the proposed increases, the taxi licensing department is expecting to face an even bigger deficit next year.

The authority is banking on an influx of taxis currently registered with Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council when the Borders authority becomes part of the new Northumberland unitary council.

In a letter of objection to the price rises, one Darlington taxi driver said: "Taxi proprietors have had major expense increases this year and have had to tighten their belts like everyone else.

"This council should also do the same and not keep passing their costs on as we will have to eventually pass more of these onto the travelling public."

A report to the council, which meets on Tuesday, recommends the proposals are approved.

And what happens if they are not in charge of licencing??? it could be left to any of the other former councils who may with hindsight charge less
if they are, and once the dust settles the owners will be able to see what council is the cheapest and get licenced by them.

I dont think any of the councils have thought this through properly yet

Whats known as the borders region is on the scottish side...theyed never come under a northumberland council. Berwick Borough council is on the english side of the border and its that authority thats becoming part of what the call a super council..though I'd probably call it a super fech up...just to clear it up..
