Former Nelson toilet to be turned into PH office

A TOILET and bus shelter is set to get a new lease of life - as a taxi office.

The brick building is situated in Burnley Road, Colne, just yards behind a new, modern bus shelter.

An application to transform the site into a taxi booking office for two vehicles was recommended for refusal by Pendle Council officers.

However, councillors described the current situation as “daft” and voted in favour of allowing the new scheme.

Council officers were not in favour of the proposal to change the building, between Primet Street and Red Scar Street, as it is 300m from the town centre.

Under the local authority’s policy ‘edge-of-centre’ businesses are required to demonstrate that a need exists.

But councillors said that while the building is not being used it is at risk of being targeted by vandals.

Speaking before he moved to approve the application, Coun Tony Greaves, said: “It is one of the daftest bus shelter and public conveniences in Colne.

“There is a perfectly good bus shelter in front of another one. Since it was sold it hasn’t been looked after and could fall foul of graffiti.

“The owner has painted it red inside to make it look a bit better, but the longer it is boarded up and not used, there is more chance of it becoming derelict.

“If this application was in the town centre we would be looking hard for a reason to turn it down because we don’t want more taxi offices there.

“It is not in a residential area and is not causing a nuisance and it is not in the town centre - that is a good thing.

“It’s the perfect place for a taxi office - I can’t think of a better one. It’s out of stupidity that we have two bus shelters.”

Highways bosses said the proposed scheme includes “acceptable” car parking spaces and “ample room” for vehicles, causing no safety hazards.

Neil Watson, the council’s planning manager, said that while some recommendations “seem a bit mad” the authority is in favour of “common sense” decisions.
