Taxi driver saves woman after pond crash

A young driver whose car ended up upside down in a village pond near Beverley was saved by a passing cabbie, firefighters said.

Fire crews were alerted by the taxi driver after he came across the upturned vehicle in the village pond at Bishop Burton, East Yorkshire.

But, as he was on the line, he realised that the driver - an 18-year-old woman - was still inside.

Crew manager Mike Davis, from Beverley Fire Station, said: "The taxi driver performed an exceptional rescue.

"His quick actions averted what was a potential fatal incident."

A Humberside Fire Service spokesman said the woman was suffering from shock and the effects of the cold and was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary by paramedics.

He said the unnamed cabbie injured his hand breaking the window of the car during the rescue at about 11.45pm on Tuesday.

Three fire engines and a Rescue Support Unit from Beverley and Hull attended the incident and fire crews wearing specialist water rescue equipment searched the pond to ensure no other casualties were trapped.

Temporary fencing was placed around the area where the car entered the pond and will be recovered later, the spokesman said.

Hero taxi driver up for bravery award

A TAXI driver who rescued a woman whose car had plunged into a pond has been nominated for a prestigious bravery award.

Caroline Saunders, 28, was dragged out of her upturned car by James Brown, after she crashed into the icy water in Bishop Burton.

Mr Brown, 41, of Beverley, waded into the pond and smashed the car window to free her, after spotting headlights shining through the water on February 10.
