Delta hailed as top techs

DELTA Taxis drove off with yet another award at last Friday’s Sefton Chamber of Commerce Business Awards and Prestige Ball.

The firm, which boasts 1,500 drivers, was awarded the New Technology Award to add to the Sefton Business of the Year accolade won at last year’s event.

Last July, Delta moved from its base on Moor Lane, Crosby, into a £3.3m state-of-the-art headquarters on Strand Road, Bootle, which houses its 100 workers who do not drive, including house engineers, call centre staff and a driver training centre.

Chamber chief executive officer Steve Dickson said: “Established in 1968, Delta Taxis is now the busiest taxi office in Europe, handling up to 2,100 bookings an hour for passengers in Knowsley, Liverpool and South Sefton.”

The award was given after Delta’s team of seven engineers, led by chief executive Gary Beesley, spoke with experts in Ontario, California, Melbourne, Dublin and Prague to develop an interactive voice recording system that could handle the firm’s calls, expected to reach eight million this year.

They also had to ensure that the system enjoyed a smooth transition from Moor Lane to Strand Road.

Delta company secretary Paul McLaughlin said: “We had outgrown our old system, and we needed something that could handle lots of calls very fast. We have been growing by almost a million jobs a year for the last four years.

“This kind of system is the first of its kind in the world.

“When I heard we had won the award, I was delighted for our team of engineers.

“This is testament to their incredible hard work, which sometimes saw them sleeping in the office and saw them speaking with engineers across five different time zones.”

This year’s Business of the Year title was won by Southport firm Mellors Catering Services.

Steve Dickson said that Sefton is well placed to weather the credit crunch storm, and then launched a scathing attack on TV journalists.

He said: “National broadcast media have perpetuated lower consumer confidence through alarmist reporting which is negligent at worst, reckless at best.

“Let’s ensure we talk ourselves up, show off our talented businesses and demonstrate those successes at every opportunity. The confidence factor that many of us are concerned about, I believe we can turn around, and begin to get back.”

The Business of the Year award was presented by Andrew Edwards, who officially starts his role as group editor of Mediamix newspapers (including the Crosby Herald) next week.

He told the audience: “I am fortunate to draw my pay cheque every month but you people have the bravery to run your own businesses.

“The hours are long, the risk is yours and the pay cheque is only there if the business is profitable.

“But you are all absolutely critical to the success of our local economy.

“I am looking forward to working with you to keep Sefton on the map.”

A special Contribution Award was handed to current Mediamix group editor and former Crosby Herald and Bootle Times editor Jane Daly, for 40 years of campaigning work with local newspapers.

Jane is due to take early retirement next month.

Obviously all 1500 won't be out at the same time so how many jobs an hour do these guys do considering the top wack is 2100 an hour?

If you were generous and assumed only 50% were out at any given time that would be between 2 - 3 jobs an hour per driver, I think :?

I suppose if 750 work days then on average a good day would yield just under three jobs an hour. I suppose on a bad day they might be doing two jobs an hour.

Quite right, but, if that's where the work is who can blame the drivers and Sefton obviously isn't big enough for them. You have Wirral drivers sitting off in Liverpool

Likewise, but its like a scene out of the Life of Brian and until such time as the government make on the spot shootings of licensed drivers legal we have zero chance of that being achieved.

Still......god loves a trier. :D

You just never know. They are suffering as is everybody. They are talking amongst themselves about forming some kind of group or co-op it will just be up to somebody to take the bull by the horns so to speak. I'm not sure I want to, but, I know I could.

Unfortunately the trade is full of people who will let you do the work, do the shouting, then stand three miles behind and watch you fall.

so if your going down that route, just make sure you have an exit strategy.
