Accrington cabbie denies injuring party-goer

A CABBIE allegedly repeatedly slashed a party-goer with a six- inch screwdriver after a row over a fare home, a jury was told.

Burnley Crown Court heard how Mohammed Asghar, 39, was said to have left alleged victim Scott Shackleton with a four inch long gash to his back in the early hours attack in Accrington.

Mr Shackleton, who had been to a family gathering with his partner, pregnant sister Donna, her fiance and their two children, told the court: “To be honest with you I was in tears and I was frightened for my life. I thought he was going to kill me.”

Mr Shackleton, 23, claimed Asghar grabbed his sister, who was hysterical and screaming, and wielded the screwdriver at her during the incident in April last year.

He continued: “I was like: ‘Get off her, get off her, she’s pregnant’.”

Asghar, of Claret Street, Accrington, denies assault causing actual bodily harm.

Louise Whaites, prosecuting, told the jury the party ordered a cab from Arrow Taxis in Accrington to take them to Burnley Road and Donna Shackleton’s partner John Walsh and the defendant had a dispute over the fare.

It became quite heated and physical and there was pushing and shoving.

Mr Shackleton, who had helped the women and children out of the taxi, saw what was happening, he went between the two men.

Miss Shackleton also got involved and the defendant grabbed her and wielded the screwdriver, which must have come from inside his cab the court heard.

Mr Shackleton stepped in to disarm Asghar and was struck repeatedly.

The defendant refused to give up his weapon and inflicted the wound in the alleged victim’s back.

The defendant was later arrested, Miss Whaites said, and claimed he had come under attack by more than one man and had used some force to push them away.

He had thought one of the two men had been armed with a knife.

The prosecutor went on: “The defendant denied having or using at any time a screwdriver and denied causing any injuries at all to Mr Shackleton.

“He said Mr Shackleton must have sustained his injuries in an earlier occasion – it had absolutely nothing to do with him.”

Miss Whaites said the alleged victim was taken to hospital, Blood stains from him were found on the defendant’s jacket.

Proceeding.

There are two sides to this story and I wonder what the truth is.

The people had been to a family gathering......I wonder if alcohol was consumed there?

And we are led to believe a driver attacked the pregnant girl for no reason at all, hence the intervention by her brother.

And I notice the taxi / PH company say there was a dispute about the fare.

I know what I think happened, but will the court?
