A TAXI driver has been banned from driving for six months after a trading standards investigation.

Mohammed Altaf, aged 48, of Brimrod Lane, Rochdale, was handed the ban by magistrates after admitting driving a taxi without the required licence or insurance.

He was also ordered to pay £265 in fines and costs.

Trading standards officials launched an investigation last July after they became aware that Altaf was driving a red Toyota Avensis without a private hire driver’s licence.

The vehicle was seen on Altaf’s driveway and the following day officers observed the vehicle being driven from Roch Valley Way to his home address.

Altaf was seen getting out of the driver’s seat. When interviewed he said he was having the vehicle serviced for the owner.

Andy Glover, the public protection manager for Rochdale Council, said: "There are stringent licensing conditions for drivers of private hire cars because such drivers are in a position of great responsibility to ensure the safe transportation of local people.

"It is unacceptable for any person to be driving a private hire vehicle without the appropriate licence and insurance."

This seems to be a big problem in England and i can see it getting as bad in Scotland do you think that there has to be a change in how private hire are regulated. My personal view is any private hire or taxi driver caught driven without the proper insurance should never be allowed to drive a private hire or taxi again.
