Aylesbury taxis taken off the road after police checks

SIX taxis operating in Aylesbury had to be taken off the road after police checks earlier this week.

On Wednesday (February 18), 20 taxis, both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, were asked to attend the police station, where a range of checks were carried out on the drivers and their vehicles.

Out of the 20 vehicles, six were prohibited from further use until immediate repairs were carried out. Five others were given delayed prohibition notices due to non-critical mechanical defects. Nine others were given advisory notices for lesser defects. One was issued a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) for a defective tyre. One of the vehicles attending the check was found not to have any insurance.

PC Phil Hanham, from Thames Valley Roads Policing department, said: "I am disappointed to see that of the twenty taxis we stopped today, six had to be taken straight off the road, with a further five with delayed prohibitions.

"We know that taxi drivers perform an essential function in Aylesbury and this operation was aimed at supporting drivers and firms that uphold high standards, while educating or prosecuting those who do not.

"Both firms and individuals need to be aware that if they ignore their legal responsibilities then prosecutions will follow."
