Blitz on taxi drivers using false documents

South Ribble Council has vowed to get tough on rogue taxi drivers who submit illegal documents to obtain a licence.

In recent months, at least two bogus drivers have been caught trying to get a hackney carriage licence by falsely handing over an apparently clean driver's licence despite having numerous motoring convictions.

In one case the perpetrator was arrested and charged by the police.

Now, licensing chiefs at the council have vowed to get tough on the fraudsters by implementing more stringent checks on wannabe cab drivers.

To combat the issue, the council has linked up with Intelligent Data Systems UK, an online data checking company who can verify licences quickly and easily over the internet.

The cost of providing this new safeguard, which is around £7.50 per application, will be added to the drivers' taxi licence application charge.

The additional licence checks will be introduced over the next few weeks.
