Police arrest three youths over Anfield taxi gun and knife robberies

THREE youths were today in custody after two taxis were robbed in Liverpool in a matter of hours.

At around 3am yesterday, a driver for Acorn Cabs picked up four youths from an address in Kirkby and took them to Anfield.

As they neared their destination, the group turned nasty, threatening the driver and telling him they had a gun.

The terrified driver was forced from his Skoda Octavia while one of the gang jumped in the driver’s seat.

The car sped off and was later found burnt out in the middle of a housing estate in Carver Street, Everton.

Around two hours later, at just after 5am, a taxi was booked from Delta Private Hire to pick up a group of men at Grasmere Street, Anfield.

When the party got in the cab, the driver was threatened with a knife and again the taxi was stolen.

Police were alerted and a patrol spotted the car in Queens Drive, Old Swan, soon after.

Following a short chase down the dual carriageway, the taxi was stopped and three youths aged 19, 18 and 17 arrested on suspicion of robbery.

They were still in custody today and set to be questioned for a second day.

Police are treating the two incidents as possibly linked.

Superintendent Graham Yip, of Merseyside police, said: “Although a gun was threatened in the first incident, there was not one seen.

“In the second incident, the driver had a knife held to his throat and was also forced to hand over the vehicle.

“Both taxis have been recovered - the first burned out and the second when three males were arrested in connection with these incidents.”

Detectives from the police’s robbery team were due to speak to both taxi drivers again today as their inquiries continue.

They were also looking at CCTV from around the two robbery scenes.

In a separate incident, at around 10.50pm on Saturday, a takeaway delivery driver was attacked by youths in Norris Green.

Food was ordered from a local takeaway but when the delivery driver turned up, the address was empty.

As the Indian driver went to leave, he was confronted by a gang of five youths.

He was punched and kicked to the floor before the gang rifled through his car, taking only an Armani sunglasses case.

Police are now looking at a possible trend across the city where taxis and takeaways are ordered and then the vulnerable driver - almost always alone- is robbed.

Anyone with information should contact police on 0151-709 6010 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
