Cabbies march through Watford http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/4166913.Cabbies_march_through_Watford/ The sounds of a cow bell, a foghorn and angry voices accompanied hundreds of taxi drivers as they marched, banners aloft, through Watford town centre today. More than 200 Hackney Carriage Drivers met in St Mary's Church square at 10am this morning, before trooping up the High Street to the town hall. The taxi drivers were protesting at a council decision to let private taxi drivers who are based in the town, but registered for trade in Three Rivers, apply for a Watford licence “through the back door”. The drivers say those who are not registered to work in Watford yet ply their trade in the town should be prosecuted. The Hackney Carriage drivers were also protesting about the number of licences being granted by Watford Borough Council, saying there are now too many taxis in Watford, forcing many drivers to the brink of bankruptcy. They have also complained at a lack of taxi ranks in the town centre. |
