Cabbies protest free-for-all zones ruining livelihood

Cabbies in Maidenhead say the Royal Borough's new free-for-all fares system is destroying their livelihood.

Drivers insist the new rule, launched on January 14, is hurting trade and has created a daily fight for fares at Maidenhead Railway Station.

Changes have meant that the Royal Borough works on a one-zone system, allowing drivers from Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead to pick up customers from wherever they like in the area.

Disgruntled Hackney Carriage licensees are due to hand in a petition to the Town Hall tomorrow, protesting against the changes.

Mohammed Munir, of Barn Close, has been a taxi driver in Maidenhead for 19 years. "Making it into one zone is a nightmare for us and we need more spaces at the station," he said. "Business is going into the drain and it is ruining our lives."

But Cllr Phillip Bicknell, cabinet member for public protection, said: "It has proved beneficial to most of the borough’s taxi drivers and, more importantly, to residents - who now have more taxis at their disposal when wishing to make a journey."

No sussex your being picky.....the bloke said; It has proved beneficial to most of the borough’s taxi drivers and, more importantly, to residents - who now have more taxis at their disposal when wishing to make a journey

All I asked was how does he know?

Has he had letters from delighted cab drivers and passengers?

Has he any idea that if the service improves in one area it maybe at the expense of another?

60. The areas of some local licensing authorities are divided into two or more zones for taxi licensing
purposes. Drivers may be licensed to ply for hire in one zone only. Zones may exist for historical
reasons, perhaps because of local authority boundary changes.

So why couldn't you just do that
