Call for more female taxi drivers and cheaper fares


ALMOST half of Barrow’s hackney taxi fares are picked up on Cornwallis Street, a study has revealed.

The survey, commissioned by Barrow Borough Council, was undertaken to evaluate the supply and demand of hackney cabs in the town.

In a pedestrian survey, the study also revealed 84.9 per cent of people interviewed believe the taxi service would be improved if they were cheaper, and 76.3 per cent said they would feel safer with female drivers.

The council is required to carry out a study every three years to show the restrictions on the number of hackney taxis are not resulting in unmet demand.

The Transport Act 1985 states: “The grant of a licence may be refused for purposes of limiting the number of hackney carriages... if, but only if, the person authorised to grant a licence is satisfied that there is no significant demand for the services of hackney carriages... which is unmet.”

The council currently limits the number of hackney cabs to 152, with some 229 private hire vehicles.

Halcrow Group Limited, which carried out the study, stated in the draft report: “The hackney carriage trade is somewhat concentrated at Cornwallis Street, accounting for 46.4 per cent of the total.

“On average, passengers wait 0.50 minutes for a cab. Passengers experience the greatest delay at the Dalkeith Street rank, where an average delay of 0.75 minutes is experienced.”

The study also found Barrow’s hackney taxis came 274th in a league table of the taxi fares, ranging from lowest to highest, across the country. Out of 376 local authorities, South Lakeland came 270th, Barrow 274th and Copeland was 341th – the most expensive in Cumbria. The study, which showed the current system to be sufficient, was unveiled at the council’s licensing meeting on Monday, where the committee decided to continue with the limitation of 152 hackney carriages.

Chief environmental health officer, Gary Ormondroyd, said: “The current arrangements meet the commercial supply and community demand. The policy with the bar on the amount is adequate for the local community.”

and 92.7% wanted a free Big Mac with every fare. :lol:

What percentage of female drivers are happy to pick up at night, with all the associated problems that go with the public "having fun"?

Me :D

I don't do days at all can't stand the traffic, the hygenically challenged, pushchairs, parents that can't or won't control their kids, alcholics (that have an aroma of their own) or bag heads who think you're their mate ffs. I've worked nights for over 8 years and fortunately not had any incidents to worry me and hopefully that is how it will stay.

I have to admit though if I wasn't on a circuit with so many fellas I probably wouldn't feel as safe as I do :wink:

Oh yes they would wouldn't they? They aren't the ones paying 2k insurance, £500 for plates & license, 5k for radio, 25k for vehicle, 15k for fuel. Why dont the taxi drivers do it for free, Iam sure more people would use the service then :lol: :lol:
