Taxis protest over licence costs

Taxi drivers in Huddersfield are staging a go-slow demonstration.

They are protesting because of plans to increase the price of ID and licence renewals, raising the overall amount of their operating costs.

The drivers say the increases are unfair because competition is now so high but the council said the increases would amount to 50p per week.

Kirklees council said it was "disappointed the drivers have chosen to protest at this early stage".

A spokesman added: "A consultation on the proposed increase in fees is currently taking place and is not due to end until 13 May."

Police said they attended the demonstration "to ensure the safety of all road users".

They added: "We would like to thank everyone for their patience whilst the demonstration took place."

Huddersfield drivers make a stand

Nice little video on page two, apart from the licensing councillor saying a 62% increase is justified. [-X

GMB officers from our Yorkshire region did attend and I am informed that an offer of assistance was given and at this moment in time several have joined.

It appears that the council has suddenly realised that they can't do what they, or in this case she, thought they could.

Maybe someone, or some union, has pointed out to the council the law of this land. :D
