Taxi protest set for council meeting THE campaign against plans for a fully wheelchair accessible taxi fleet will be taken to tonight's meeting of Wyre Forest District Council. Taxi drivers and disabled taxi users will stage a protest outside the meeting at Stourport Civic Centre, which begins at 6pm. The protest is timed to coincide with a motion by the Liberals and Liberal Democrats due to be put forward at the meeting, calling for a scrutiny of the licensing policy by the Community Services Scrutiny Committee. The motion also calls for a moratorium on the implementation of the policy for six months, while the proposed review and a Government consultation on taxi policy is carried out. “Saloon or estate cars whose licences are due to expire within that period should be allowed to continue in use, subject to satisfactory inspection," states the motion. Last month (April), the council’s Conservative administration ordered a report on the taxi policy to “fully appraise members of all the relevant and latest facts.” The protesters are opposing the district council’s policy, which states all Wyre Forest taxis should be wheelchair accessible by 2013. Wyre Forest Taxi Drivers Association is calling for new licence holders to be forced to buy wheelchair accessible vehicles, while it says existing licence holders should be allowed to continue running saloon cars. Taxi drivers claim many disabled people cannot easily use the specially designed vehicles. Trevor Owen, association spokesman, argued he had “overwhelming evidence” that wheelchair accessible taxis “cause great distress and hardship to those unable to access this type of vehicle”. He explained: “There are people with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, elderly people with a walking stick - they all have trouble using these wheelchair accessible vehicles.” |
