Sheffield city centre taxi crackdown
A CRACKDOWN on rogue taxis in Sheffield city centre led to 136 vehicles being stopped for checks over a five-month period. Some 199 drivers were also checked to ensure they were properly licensed, insured and fit to drive.
Sheffield Council officers issued 93 warnings, 36 notices to improve vehicles, and three cautions against drivers for minor breaches of rules and regulations.
More serious action was taken against 38 drivers, who had their individual licences reviewed by the council and five were prosecuted.
Two admitted not being insured and were fined £150 and £50. Three drivers were fined £340, £360 and £100 respectively after being caught plying for trade while unlicensed.
The crackdown took place between last November and this March.
