New taxi policy introduced in Shropshire to protect passengers A TAXI policy has been introduced in Shropshire in a bid to improve public safety. The new rules will make it easier for people to identify licensed taxis and taxi drivers. Under the new Shropshire Council policy, brought in on April 1, all hackney carriages – taxis which don’t have to be pre-booked – must carry roof signs that identify them as taxis. An external rear plate, internal sign and driver’s badge will also be issued to drivers and must be displayed at all times. The internal sign will display the details of the vehicle and the plate number and the number of persons the vehicle is licensed to carry. Checks will be carried out to ensure drivers are wearing their badges. Andy Goldsmith, assistant director for public protection at Shropshire Council, said: “The better the vehicle marking the easier it is for people to be sure the vehicle is a licensed taxi before getting in and these new arrangements should make it easier for people to identify official, licensed taxis and avoid using unlicensed vehicles. “The presence of roof signs on hackney carriages will provide some additional reassurance – enabling people to identify the vehicle from a place of safety before approaching the car.” He added: “If anyone has any concerns about a vehicle or driver they should pass them on in confidence to the council’s public protection service.” |

Not a lot of use though if the PH boys fropm neighbouring districts have roof signs similar punters can't tell the difference when they've had a beer or two ! Isn't it about time there were national rules which would stipulate different styles and sizes for hackney and PH to make them more obviously different |

Isn't it about time there were national rules which would stipulate different styles and sizes for hackney and PH to make them more obviously different I can see your point but at the end of the night the punter doesn't give a monkeys what they go home in they just want to get home. Maybe they should start fining the punter for getting it wrong

I think if the DfT had their way all taxis would be WAVs, so that may be the answer to confusion. |
